Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Otherwise known as Emma's return to updating....

I just got back from the cinema. Literally 10 minutes ago. Hopped online and became inspired.

I haven't read the Harry Potter books, because I really didn't think they were very "me" (how very narrow minded of me), so I really didn't have a clue what the film was about, besides a boy, a magic school and a whole loada other stuff that happens along the way.

The story begins in a suburb somewhere in England (not too sure of the specifics) with an old wizard taking light from lamps with a wand, and escalates into a journey of one boy and his friends on a quest to find the philosopher's stone. Sounds pretty exciting. Well, for the most part it is, if you can blank out the irritating "child actor" aspect. The plot, laced with humour and suspense, was somewhat hindered by the constant squawking of Hermione and the wooden expressions of the two boys, but you gotta give them credit because they are, after all, averaging around the age of about 11. Child actors aside, the supporting adult cast in the film all play their roles exceptionally and make a completely "out of this world" story almost a reality. The most striking features of the film are perhaps the computer generated images which bring us the goblins, three-headed dogs and give Harry the chance to become invisible. Very cool, and breathtaking at times, quite often undermining the acting.

Recommended for people who've read the book and are curious, children, and anyone interested in the fantasy genre. So.... not me. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it, but I think that to really appreciate the film you shouldn't read into it too much. A fun piece of entertainment with too many child actors.
