Lily Bart, a beautiful woman torn between her heart and her head fails in trying to make an impression on the New York social in-crowd. After years of being a popular social figure, her luck finally runs out when in the search for a husband, one friend and one indecent proposition destroy her chances and push her down to the bottom of the social ladder where what follows is worse than she could ever imagine. Pleading with relatives and friends, she tries desperately to get back on her feet when she eventually turns to a far more serious and deadly remedy.
